VA Offering Dental Insurance Program for the First Time Ever

Posted by Gregory M. Rada | November 27, 2013 | Health Benefits

The VA announced earlier this month the start of the VA Dental Insurance Program (VADIP), which allows veterans who are enrolled in VA health care to purchase dental insurance through Delta Dental or MetLife. VADIP enrollment began November 15th with coverage starting January 1, 2014. Turn the page to see how to calculate your potential premiums for dental insurance (the rates are low).

You can calculate Delta Dental and MetLife’s plan rates simply by going to their website and entering your zip code – no account creation or personal information required. I ended up going with Delta because they had more dentists in their network. I could choose from three different plans with monthly premiums of $12, $18, or $33. I went with the middle plan, which is a great rate compared to it’s equivalent individual-market plan which costs more than twice as much ($42/month). So, VADIP appears to be offering very affordable dental insurance which is welcome news for many vets.

To see if you are eligible for VA health care benefits, visit the VA Health Benefits Explorer. To enroll, visit the VA here. Remember, OEF/OIF/OND vets who served in a combat theater automatically receive 5 years of enhanced eligibility for VA health care benefits upon separation from the military, regardless of service-connected disabilities or not. If you have any questions about VA health care benefits or VADIP, contact me today.
